The Jimmy Hornet Story
Anthea Palmer (Founder) is no stranger to the Creative Arts, having worked as a professional Singer in genres of rock, blues, pop and jazz for almost a decade, she also co-wrote songs for her original band “Drama Queen.” The band recorded two independent EPs and played venues throughout Australia during the 1990s.
Also a great lover of the visual arts, and wanting to surround herself with creative souls from all walks of life, Anthea founded and curated “Watch Tower Studio” an Art and Design Gallery based in South Melbourne, Australia.
Coming from an entrepreneurial family with natural business acumen, Anthea studied a Bachelor of Business at Swinburne University and “did her time” working in the corporate world of finance (GE) and communications (The Message Centre).
Never losing her love of the arts, Anthea moved back into the industry as a business coach and course writer for professional Musicians. The name Jimmy Hornet came to her in the representation of her ideal client. It was an avatar for all those Musicians who have no choice but to write, perform and create….their musical output essential to their very existence.
The Chandelier Room (Melbourne, Australia) was Anthea’s beloved live music venue (2009 to 2014). There she hosted hundreds of original, live music performances and nurtured the careers of many a Singer-Songwriter. Alongside the venue was the very first Jimmy Hornet outlet, an emporium selling an eclectic range of Art, Design, Musical Instruments, and Vintage clothing.
When in 2014, Anthea had the opportunity to move to China with her life-partner, she sold her Melbourne based business and set-out on a new adventure. Determined to continue developing her career in the creative arts, Anthea registered a Wholly Owned Foreign Enterprise in China (a process not for the faint-hearted). She opened Jimmy Hornet Zhongshan, China in September 2016.
For two years (2016-2018) Jimmy Hornet Zhongshan hosted International performances by Musicians from Australia, USA, Italy, Brazil, and Argentina. It also ran a House Jazz Band event every Thursday night and introduced Latin Jazz on Tuesdays.
Due to an ongoing shareholder dispute and pending court case, Anthea made the decision to close Jimmy Hornet Zhongshan on Sunday 30 September 2018. It was very difficult to part with the fabulous Jimmy Hornet Zhongshan Team (Anthea loves you all so much). The closure will detach the brand from the “non-believers,” and enable Anthea to re-launch the brand independently in 2019.
