Doc White is a musician, songwriter, actor and playwright who grew up in Adelaide at a time when some of the most bizarre murders in the country were being committed. As a result of an unfortunate series of seemingly random events, a copy of Lightning Hopkins first Arhoolie record landed on his old HMV record player and the gloom was lifted. A lifelong and, some would say, unhealthy interest in blues and true crime evolved that has remained to this day.

Doc plays country blues like the devil (who was an early fan) and is one of the few modern blues artists to adopt the mandolin, despite it being an instrument that is nearly impossible to tune.  Doc still holds the record for the Glenelg to Somerton ocean swim he set in 1971 due to the race being abandoned in 1972.

Doc has appeared at major festivals and tours Australia solo with his band Si Compadres. He also created the blues and burlesque show The Lowdown Hokum Orchestra and Burlesque Revue.

Doc’s music has been played on ABC Radio and he has been featured on The Planet and in Rhythms Magazine.

Doc’s tune Cropduster Blues was voted Song of the Year at the 2004 Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society VicTas Blues Awards.

Switching effortlessly between downbeat groove-makers and upbeat mood-changers, she is as comfortable performing on festival stages as she is in living rooms and the cosy Sydney bars that she regulars.

In an industry flooded with auto-tune and ghostwriters, Stephanie’s honesty is undeniable in the live arena.

Kurt Gentle – 21 October 2017

Jimmy Hornet is very proud to present multi-instrumentalist and award winning Kurt Gentle at Jimmy Hornet. Presented by Anthea Palmersinger songwriter – Kurt Gentle.

Saturday 21 October

  • Doors open 6pm for dinner service

  • Music Set 1: 8:00pm to 8:40pm
  • Music Set 2: 9:00pm to 9:40pm
  • Entry Ticket Price: 98 RMB

One of Melbourne’s most loved singer-songwriters, Kurt is a seasoned, solo musician playing within the Australian Blues-Roots scene. Gracing the stage with humility, Kurt delivers a beautifully crafted set full of high energy stomp, overdriven lap slide guitar, old school finger style shred, all within an atmosphere of soul-baring songwriting. Kurt plays a variety of instruments that he blends into his unique sound – numerous guitars, harmonica, stomp box, tambourine, and vocals.

Kurt will get your toes tapping with his stomp and bold, overdriven riffs. But he will also strip back the layers to sing from his heart, where his lyrics are clearly formed.

From 2010 up to 2016, Kurt toured, gigged, recorded, and shared his music throughout Australia, grasping the eyes and ears of many. He released his 10-track debut album ‘Barefoot Freedom’  to a sold out Evelyn Hotel show on a Sunday night in 2012. He has appeared at many music festivals around Australia, such as: The Australian Blues Festival, Queenscliffe Music Festival, The Apollo Bay Music Festival, Gulgong Folk Festival, The Basin Music Festival, The Echuca Blues Festival, and The Healesville Music Festival, to name a few.

Throughout his first few years as a performer, he completed numerous self-managed, interstate tours around the country, and a two year signing with Boxer Records.

Kurt has now a new portfolio of tunes and has just completed the recording of his new full length studio album ‘Heart’s Fire’. This new music sees Kurt move into a slightly different direction, playing with a band this music is heavier, has more grit and is full of excitement. Fat, overdriven riffs, with passionate vocals and the backing of incredible stomp drums that’d get your feet dancing. 2017 holds exciting and wonderful opportunities for Kurt, such as performing in the USA and Canada, the recording/release of new music, plus gigging and touring in the land down under! Big things to come!-

Dinner available from 6pm.

Full Bar Service available.

Music Set 1: 8pm to 8:40pm

Music Set 2: 9:20 to 10:00pm

Hugh McGinlay Live at Jimmy Hornet

Hugh was born in the UK in 1980 but came to Australia before he could walk and was in Melbourne before he could talk. After a pleasant childhood he was on the road to becoming a journalist when he realised that every day he just wanted to play guitar. Songwriting had always comes easily to him so age 17 he decided to be a songwriter.

At the time his greatest dream was to play in a café and have a girl smile at him.

Gigging steadily with High School bands and solo shows he cut his teeth on the Melbourne folk circuit. In 2000 he was recruited in Blues Band Howlin’ Time, which has at one time or other been fronted by Geoff Achison, Ash Grunwald, Geoff Payne and Justin Connor. Having left this band he started alt-blues band The Pelicans.

The Pelicans spent the next 3 years playing in Melbourne and along the east coast. Their last show was in 2004.

From this Hugh focussed on solo work. Having released his first EP Rome wasn’t built anyway he had been gigging steadily, developing his style of lyrical storytelling. He spent 2004 and 2005 recording his debut album Second Guess released on his own record label – Red End Records. The album was favourably reviewed and received radio play in Australia and abroad.

To diversify, Hugh began a musical project with his wife Louise Kent, a jazz infused duo called Desperately Not Yoko. Louise’s vocal made the group instantly successful and they were soon joined by Ryan Vermuelan and Phil Cadman on Drums and Keys respectively. DNY release a self titled EP in 2007 and received airplay in Europe, America and Australia.

Hugh Toured Europe in 2007 and 2008, playing the Wychwood festival in Cheltenham and the Garden festival in Jersey. In 2008 he began recording his sophomore album Elsewhere, a stripped back album of poetic lyrics and acoustic guitar. Following a year of touring solo he yearned for a fuller sound and greater access to knock knock jokes while on tour, so he began the Hugh McGinlay and the Recessive Genes in its current incarnation. They began recording Hugh’s Third Album Bliss in July 2012. Bliss was released in 2015 and is Hugh’s most successful recording to date with international airplay and rave reviews.

Hugh toured New Zealand in March 2013, then again in 2015, he’s going again in 2017, I mean wasn’t all the Aussie touring enough?

When not working on music, Hugh writes offbeat fiction. He was a finalist in the Griffith’s Review for his novella ‘Mosquito’. His first novel Jinx was published in in 2015 to critical and commercial acclaim. Hugh is working on a second in the series (featuring hard drinking milliner Catherine Kint and barman Boris Shakhovshoy) with a working title Pachyderm.

Hugh lives in Melbourne with Louise, their two children, a cat and 3 chickens.
